Toronto history

Toronto was originally founded as the town of York in 1793 by John Graves Simcoe, the first Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada. At the time, York was a small settlement on the northern shore of Lake Ontario, serving as the capital of the new province.

In 1834, York was renamed Toronto, a word derived from the Mohawk language meaning "the place where trees stand in the water." The new name reflected the city's growing importance and its location on the shores of Lake Ontario.
